KUALA LUMPUR, March 24 — Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud’s son wants to settle divorce proceedings with his estranged wife out-of-court, avoiding a legal suit over her RM400 million claim that would put the wealth of the Sarawak chief minister’s family under scrutiny just before next month’s state polls.
Datuk Seri Mahmud Abu Bekir Taib’s lawyer Saadiah Din told reporters outside the Syariah court here today that Abdul Taib’s eldest son was willing to reach a divorce settlement amicably with Shahnaz out-of-the-court.
“I have been given an instruction since last year to settle all issues pertaining to their marriage and divorce claim in an amicable manner,” Datuk Seri Mahmud Abu Bekir Taib’s lawyer Saadiah Din told reporters outside the Syariah court here today.
Mohd Rafie Mohd Shafie said that Datin Seri Shahnaz A. Majid was also prepared to settle with Abdul Taib’s eldest son out of court.
Shahnaz is claiming RM100 million in alimony and RM300 million in matrimonial property from Mahmud.
She told the Syariah Court the amount was reasonable because they have been married for over 19 years and her husband earns a high income as well as owns properties worth billions of ringgit.
Abdul Taib, who has been Sarawak chief minister for 30 years, has been repeatedly accused of corruption and land grabs.
He has announced that he will step down after leading Sarawak Barisan Nasional (BN) in the April 16 polls.
The state opposition expects to make gains in the 71-seat assembly which had 63 BN assemblymen before it was dissolved on Monday.
In her divorce papers, Shahnaz, who is the sister of jazz queen Datuk Sheila Majid, claimed that she had not had an intimate relationship with her husband for more than 10 years.
She claimed that Mahmud had caused her physical and mental torture. - Malaysian Insider
