CM clashes with ex-CM over investments

Lim and Koh trade barbs over the latter's promise of a RM4 billion investment in Penang which he claims has yet to materialise

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Penang chief minister Koh Tsu Koon’s promise of a RM4 billion investment is nothing but an empty boast, the state’s current boss said.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said that there was no sign of the upcoming investment, one month after it was announced.

“Koh claimed he played a major role as an adviser to the American company in making its decision to invest RM4 billion to set up a Global Excellence Centre in Penang.”

“However, there has been no news or concrete evidence of this new RM4billion investment by the American company,” said Lim today.

According to a May 16 Star report, Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak said that Penang would enjoy an “extraordinary” investment.

At the time, Koh said that a new initiative by a Penang-based multi-national company (MNC) would be revealed soon.

A May 26 The Sun report, “An investment by any other name”, showed that the MNC involved in the RM4 billion investment was Motorola.

Lim said that instead of coming true with his announcement, Koh attacked Penang for not revealing its industrial development blueprint.

‘Koh attacking Penang’

He accused the former CM of trying to politicise the Greater Penang Masterplan (GPM), a Najib-introduced initiative to turn Penang into a metropolis.

“I explained that the state goverment had completed preparation for the Penang Blueprint, but decided to shelve it to work together with Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Idris Jala on the GPM,” Lim said.

“The Penang state government will release the Penang Blueprint report after the GPM is finalised.”

Lim said that Koh saw the GPM as a threat to his political comeback as the Penang CM. Lim then accused the former of playing political games.

In a press conference held at the Parliament lobby later today, Koh said that he never announced a RM4 billion investment.

“I want to ask him (Lim), when did I promise a RM4 billion investment?”

Koh said that Lim was out to mislead Penangites, and insisted that his actions were “irresponsible”.

Demanding an answer from the current CM, Koh said: “Let him reply. I’m really, really fed up with this misleading statement.”
