CM: Ex-CM’s claim shames Najib

Koh Tsu Koon's announcement of a huge investment and later denying it may have embarrassed Najib, says Lim Guan Eng.

KUALA LUMPUR: The investment boast by former Penang chief minister Koh Tsu Koon may have caused embarassment for Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak, said Koh’s successor Lim Guan Eng.

Lim said that Koh’s announcement of an “extraordinary” investment on May 16 may have led Najib to make a similar call on May 19 in the US.

Koh’s denial of the investment yesterday, Lim said, may have led to the PM making a false statement.

“Apparently, there is no RM4 billion investment. Has the RM4 billion disappeared, or is this just another one of his empty announcements? If that information is false, then he has embarrassed the prime minister,” Lim told reporters in Parliament.

According to a May 16 report in the Sun, Koh hinted that a then-unidentified company was going to invest in the state.

Najib later revealed the company to be Motorola, which would invest RM4 billion to set up a Global Excellence Center in the DAP-controlled state.

However, Koh denied making a RM4 billion announcement and called his successor “irresponsible” for uttering “misleading” statements.

Lim, on the other hand, did not appear to be fazed by Koh’s words.

“I’m not interested in Koh,” the chief minister said, when asked if he intended to take legal action against his predecessor. “I just want to know what happened to your announcement of a Global Excellence Center.”

On another matter, Lim criticised the government for paying consultants RM64 million to come up with Government Transformation Programme and Economic Transformation Programme initiatives.

Demanding a breakdown of the costs involved, Lim said: “Who are the consulting companies? We want to know who they are.”

He also took Koh to task for calling the RM64 million bill “cheap”.

  1. It is easy to say RM64 million "cheap" for those who have pocketed rakhyat's money in millionns if not billions..for to save rm 64 a month is very impossible
