Karpal raps two NST journalists

The DAP veteran says he never intended to insult any Muslims and he had apologised for his “Islamic state over my dead body” remark in 1999.

PETALING JAYA: DAP chairman Karpal Singh called the reports by two New Straits Times reporters as gutter journalism at its best.

He called the reporters hatchet-men and said both he and Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim were the primary targets of character assassination by some reporters.

His anger was aimed at two reporters from the New Straits Times who said he had arrogantly chastised Malay leaders and had not apologised for his “Islamic state over my dead body” remark made over 20 years ago.

Shamsul Akmar, in his article titled “Hudud and Karpal’s faux pas” on Sunday criticised the DAP leader for being arrogant in calling on former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad to repent as if the latter was a sinner.

In another article titled “Karpal’s political chicanery exposed again” by Azmi Anshar yesterday, the journalist said that Karpal has yet to apologise for his infamous “Islamic state over my dead body” remark made during the 1990 general election.

“I believe Shamsul has taken offence that I have called Mahathir to repent. I said that in a bona fide manner without having any intention of hurting the feelings of any Muslims,”said Karpal.

On June 10, Karpal told Mahathir to “bertaubat” (repent) for the mistakes he had done in the past and present, saying the former premier had wronged Malaysians in many ways over the years.

This came after Mahathir took a swipe at PAS for moving away from its Islamic state agenda and called for a welfare state in its recently concluded party polls.

In his blog on June 7, Mahathir also said that Karpal was the ‘biggest winner” in the PAS polls as the DAP leader had “successfully” convinced PAS to abandon its Islamic state agenda.

Taking Azmi to task, Karpal reminded the journalist that he had already made a public apology over his statement on the Islamic state during the 1999 general election.

“It’s on public record that I had made the apology at Dewan Sri Pinang in Penang, which was attended by not less than 1,000 people, including top leaders from PAS,” said Karpal.

He added that even New Straits Times itself on June 9, in an interview with Kelantan menteri besar Nik Aziz Nik Mat, had reported that Karpal had issued an apology over the matter.

“Shamsul and Azmi have no class and do not enhance journalistic ethics expected of a newspaper like New Straits Times,” he said.
