Penang mosque committee election

Reference: Enakmen Undang Undang Keluarga Islam 2005 (PIFE 2005)

  1. I have been busy with work past 10 days or so that I had little time to browse the news in detail. I missed the story over the Mosque Committee Election (MCE) in Penang until I saw on TV3 news last night. Scores of unhappy BN politicians and “independent” politicians gave their views. As anticipated the argument used was along the line of Malay, Islam, the Ummah and the DAP infiltration into the mosque. Honestly I don’t buy this argument. Penang as we know it is governed by PR coalition.

  2. A mosque is part of the community. Every mosque has its own members list which is called “Kariah”. I live right next to BA mosque (aka MBA) and a registered Kariah of MBA. Till today I do not know the boundary of my mosque kariah and the basis used in defining its borders. This is very basic and should be made available easily. Many of us take this for granted. I researched on the internet and found nothing. Hopefully someone here can guide me.

  3. Over the years, the system has always been that the “government govern”. They govern our daily lives right up to the lowest level of government system i.e. the local authority. It is the same when it comes to governance of a mosque. The people ability to self govern is lost. Politicians have infused themselves into the local government and mosque that led them to have control and platform to do anything that they wish.

  4. I guess MAIP is under a bind. If they are to use the existing powers which have been stipulated by item 104 (1) (b) PIFE 2005, BN will make it as if they are removing pro UMNO mosque committee. At the current moment they actually have that right but they chose not to do so. The election is actually a process to let the community to elect their mosque committee members. (We must not confuse with the appointment of Bilal and Imam which is appointed by MAIP) We must appreciate that the MCM is nothing more than an administrative body of the mosque. I think the community is mature enough to handle such matters.

  5. It will give all Muslims irrespective whether they have a political inclination or otherwise to participate in selection of people to administer mosque cleanliness, securities, activities, assets and finances. They have to select among their own “kariah” don’t have to accept any politically appointed person by the government. That should be the way. Are we so immature that we cannot elect our own community representatives with the right administrative skills? It seems we are embarrassing ourselves with this non issue. For the record at MBA we elect our own committee.
