MACC report against Palani over TV show funding

A Malacca PKR leader says it was a clear case of cronyism.

PETALING JAYA: A PKR leader today lodged a report with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) against MIC president G Palanivel, accusing him of soliciting RM5 million from the government on behalf of a private company.

G Rajendran, vice president of Malacca PKR, lodged the report at the MACC office here. He made a similar report at the Tampin police station yesterday.

Rajendran was acting on a FMT report on Monday that was based on information given by a MIC branch chairman.

The report said Palanivel, in a letter to the Prime Minister’s Department dated March 7, asked for RM5 million for Vanakam Malaysia Dotcom Sdn Bhd to help it cover the cost of producing two TV programmes for a Tamil channel on Astro. FMT’s source said he used a MIC letterhead.

However, MIC central working committee member KP Samy said Palanivel had only proposed the programmes to the government and had no knowledge of their financial aspects.

But Rajendran said it was clear that the MIC president had abused his power to help his cronies.

He said the amount allegedly solicited would have been better spent on education or skill-building programmes.

“With the RM5 million we can help 20 medical students or 50 engineering students,” he said.”If the allegation is true, then Palanivel must immediately resign all his positions, including the minister’s post.”

The two shows that Vanakam Malaysia Dotcom proposed were Paarvai (Outlook) and Malarchi (Development). Paarvai is already on air every weekend. Rajendran said he was not impressed by it and alleged that its rating among viewers was low.

He said his report to the MACC presented the anti-graft body with an opportunity to counter allegations that it had a bias for Barisan Nasional.
