One held after protest against EO in Ipoh

A protest led by Perak PKR in front of the police district headquarters in Ipoh this morning saw a participant being arrested later.

perak eo sit in protest 100811 01Some 30 people were involved in the 9am protest against the detention of a P Manivanan, 20, under the draconian Emergency Ordinance (EO) since July 6.

The protestors included Parti Sosialis Malaysia's Sungai Siput parliamentarian Dr Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj, who was freed last month from detention under the EO; PKR Teja assemblyperson Chang Lih Kang; and PKR Simpang Pulai assemblyperson Chan Ming Kai.

Police did not disrupt the hour-long silent protest, during which protestors held up posters.

S Nagenteran, an aide to Jeyakumar, was leaving after the protest about 10am when he was stopped by traffic police near the Ipoh Padang. He was then taken to the police district headquarters.

NONE"We are not very sure of the reason for his arrest, but we suspect it is because of the sticker on his car which calls for the release of the PSM6," Chang (left)said initially, while on his way to the police station.

He later tweeted: 'Nagen has been released, together with his car. Luckily they didn't detain the car under EO!'

The police had only taken down Nagenteran's particulars before releasing him after an hour, he said.

Chang also said the police had confirmed that Nagentaran was held in relation to the car sticker, but did not explain which law had been violated.

'PSM6' refers to the six activists detained for 28 days before they were released on July 29.

Changing story

Manivanan had been taken away by the police together with a friend from his house in Chemor on May 7 without any reason being given.

The police had informed his parents on May 23 that he was being detained for involvement in a murder case, but later changed the allegation to theft.

Manivanan was then transferred to the Melaka Tengah police station for further investigation.

He has been detained under the EO since July 6. His parents have claimed that they saw their son being physically abused by a police officer. - Malaysiakini
