Whether the 13th general elections are close by or not, Malaysians can count on former premier Mahathir Mohamad to now and then issue one of his emotive and blatantly racist speeches, all in the name of Malay unity and at the expense of Malaysian unity.
The 85-year-old former leader who ruled Malaysia with a fist of iron told Malays in the country they will lose their identity and power especially with regards to social, political and economic matters within the next 10 years.
He based his prediction on the growing political divide within the Malay community itself. Many Malays feel themselves to be a part of an unfair power-sharing. They become resentful and behave as minorities.
When that happens, said Mahathir, these minority groups within the Malay community will be forced to ask other parties for help. But this will make them "in debt" with the "helper" and Malay Muslims will end up the big losers.
He pointed out as examples how Malay Muslims were losing their identity in Singapore and how they faced severe economic pressure in Thailand.
“In Singapore, the Mufti cannot protest on the serving of non-halal meat at events that include Malay Muslims (and other Muslims) even though Muslims cannot eat them. It’s fine to serve and this happens because the Malays have no power,” Mahathir had said in a speech while launching the Seminar Perpaduan Ekonomi dan Ummah in Bangi.
Insist on your share of economic pie
Mahathir, who is chairman of the Muslim Welfare Organization Malaysia or Perkim, also advised the Muslim community to insist on their share of national wealth and manage it because economic strength could save the religion.
For example, he said many of the Arab countries had wealth from oil but failed to regenerate returns. They were satisfied to save them as treasury bonds in developed countries like the United States of America.
However according to him, the US that is now in debt by as much as USD14 trillion, and might not be able to repay those bonds.
“Poverty is infidelity and religious faith can become weak,” warned Mahathir.
