KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 2 — Perkasa today demanded the Inspector-General of Police halt the “Seksualiti Merdeka” event and take action against its organisers.

The Malay rights group’s youth wing chief, Irwan Fahmi Ideris, said the event went against Malaysian culture and posed a threat to the country.

The group also urged Tan Sri Ismail Omar to take stern action against former Bar Council president Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan who is expected to officially launch the event next week.

“Wira Perkasa is pushing for this because this Ambiga has gone too far, splitting up the Malays and making human rights a new religion... a lot of this is against the teachings of Islam.

“We also want the Attorney-General to charge Ambiga... she is like other criminals who have angered Malays and action needs to be taken,” he said.

Perkasa submitted a protest memorandum against the human rights event to Ismail at the Bukit Aman police headquarters here today, which was received by the headquarters’ officer in charge of public relations, ACP Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf.

Irwan Fahmi added that other parties, including the Home Ministry and Malaysian Department of Islamic Development (Jakim), also needed to step in and stop the event from taking place.

“The people, especially the young, will be easily influenced and manipulated by the organisers of this programme,” he added.

“Seksualiti Merdeka” is an annual festival celebrating the rights of people with different sexual orientations and identities. It has been organised since 2008 by a loose coalition of non-governmental organisations, artists and activists.

“Seksualiti Merdeka” kicked off last night and will go on till November 13 at the Annexe Gallery here. It will officially be launched by Ambiga on November 9.

The event’s itinerary includes a public forum, workshops, book launches, art exhibitions and live performances.

NGOs and political parties including PAS Youth have strongly opposed the event, calling it a celebration of homosexual and transgender lifestyles.
