‘Ridiculous’ lie detector call draws flak

MIC man comes under fire for suggesting that Lim, his wife Betty Chew and Ng Phaik Keng, whom the CM had been accused of having an affair with, should undergo a lie test.
PETALING JAYA: The suggestion that Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng scientifically prove his fidelity has drawn condemnation.
Lim termed the call from MIC leader R Ramanan for a lie detector test as ridiculous while PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar described it as a pathetic display of political mudslinging.
The DAP secretary-general told FMT the opposition had never even suggested that Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak subject himself to such a test to prove his innocence over the allegations against him.
Dismissing the need to issue a counter-challenge to Barisan Nasional leaders to undergo a similar test, Lim said: “When a person is ridiculous, there is no need to ape him.”
Yesterday, Ramanan said Lim, his wife Betty Chew and Ng Phaik Keng, whom the chief minister had been accused of having an affair with should undergo the test.
The MIC social and welfare bureau deputy chairman was responding to the verbal jousting between DAP and MCA over this issue.
Lim, however, reiterated his challenge to MCA to repeat the allegation that he had an affair with his former staff in public.
“Repeat it in public so that we can sue in court to prove their lies. Why doesn’t MCA dare repeat this allegation outside the House?” he asked.
The allegation was first raised in the Malacca state assembly, of which Lim’s wife was a member, by MCA state assemblyperson Gan Tian Loo.
Lim denied the allegation and criticised his opponents for resorting to gutter politics while at the same time reminded MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek that he had never abused his parliamentary privilege to raise the latter’s sex scandal.
The DAP leader’s alleged extra-marital affair had become the latest focal point in the duel between the two parties targeting the Chinese electorate.
‘Focus on inculcating discipline’
Meanwhile, Nurul, in her reponse to Ramanan, called on MIC to shift its focus on disciplining its members instead.
“I urge MIC to work on inculcating a culture of discipline in the party in the effort of ridding gangsterism and political thuggery [from its ranks],” she said
For decades, MIC had been dealing with the stigma of being a political party that relied more on the logic of force as opposed to the force of logic, which its critics never fail to point out.
Recently, a PKR member sustained a broken cheek bone during an altercation between MIC Youth representatives and those from the opposition party outside the Prime Minister’s Office.
Yesterday, PKR vice-president N Surendran filed a police report claiming that he received a text message which threatened him with an acid attack if he continued criticising MIC.
Ramanan sticks by his call
Despite the flak his suggestion had drawn, Ramanan refused to budge.
The MIC leader argued that his remark was not an attempt at political mudslinging but rather made in Lim’s best interest.
“I just suggested that he take the test to resolve the matter once and for all.
“My suggestion was for the good of Lim and his family. I did not attack him, his wife or the other woman involved. I did not even say that there was an affair,” he told FMT.
Ramanan said that his point was simple and if Lim had not committed any wrongs, then he should have no qualms about agreeing to the test.
However, the suggestion did not go down well with all in MIC either, as it was criticised by the party’s central working committee member S Vell Paari.
