'Alternative Bar' set for Sept launch

An alternative to the Bar Council, spearheaded by lawyer Nordin Yusoff, is expected to be ready by next month.

According to The Star today, Nordin claimed to have mustered enough support to form the new body.

"We have spoken to Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Nazri Abdul Aziz and are formaslising the registration with the Registrar of Societies," he was quoted as saying.

Nordin declined to divulge details other than stating that its membership would be open to ministers, judges, academicians and non-practising lawyers.

The alternative body was first mooted after the Bar Council convened an extraordinary general meeting to discuss the violence witnessed after the conclusion of the Bersih 3.0 protest.

It passed 12 resolutions with 939 votes to 16 at the May 11 meeting, including condemning the police violence at the rally, to the chagrin of a hand full of members.

Nordin cited the Bar Council as being a bully and acting as it pleases as a reason for attempting to form an alternative organisation.

"I am sick and tired of their antics and I am going to expose their dirty tricks soon," he was quoted as saying.
