Namewee's ode to Chong Wei sparks controversy

Filmmaker and musician Namewee has again sparked controversy with an online video, this time over his so-called tribute to national badminton player Lee Chong Wei.

The four-minute 27-second video features Namewee in a short monologue praising Lee, before launching into a song promoting his forthcoming film Hantu Gangster, while the chorus features a consoling tone.

This is peppered with Namewee’s trademark sarcasm, a swipe at the prime minister’s wife Rosmah Mansor and his usual helping of vulgarities in Chinese.

It is understood that the video clip was uploaded on YouTube at dawn this morning, about 12 hours after Lee lost the gold medal to archrival Lin Dan in the men’s badminton finals of the London Olympics

In mere hours, criticism started to pour in and public access to the video was disabled.

Another YouTube user has uploaded the same clip and it is still generating criticism on Namewee’s Facebook page.

Among others, Facebook users are accusing Namewee of using Lee’s defeat for shameless self-promotion, since his movie opens in theatres in three days.

“I despise you. Opportunist!” said one Facebook user, Da Xiong.

“Your song is a loaded advertisement. Did you sincerely write a song for Dato Lee or are you just promoting your film?” wrote one Wind Kho.

‘Respect the sport’

Some Facebook users have accused Namewee of having no respect for sports because he used vulgarities against Lin Dan.

“Can you please respect players from other countries? This is a competition. No one is wrong in the match. Why the [expletive] are you calling people [expletive] and [expletive] in the video? You are destroying the spirit of sport,” wrote Eric Sagittarius.

“Winning and losing (in sport) is normal. Why are you accusing Lin Dan of being ‘hao lian’ (Hokkien for being arrogant)?

“Anyone who wins an Olympic medal will be overcome by emotions. Wouldn’t you? Please reflect on this,” wrote another Facebook user.

However, Namewee has his fair share of supporters as well, who praised him for the humorous song and urged others not to be too sensitive.
