KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 1 — Police will be monitoring the activities of Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) leader P. Waythamoorthy who has just returned to Malaysia on the grounds of national security.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar said the return of the Hindraf leader would not be a threat to national security so long as he abided by the laws of this country.
“We hope his return will not lead to any disturbance and other actions which infringe the law. If he is back with good intentions just like other Malaysians, we will not take any action,” he told reporters after visiting the Ramadan Bazaar in Bangsar here with Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin, here, today.
Ismail (picture) advised Waythamoorthy to cooperate with the police and the community to maintain national security.
“I believe as a Malaysian citizen, he will cooperate with us and all other parties which respect the laws of the country,” he said.
Today, a news portal reported the return of Waythamoorthy to Malaysia from Singapore after he left the country following a Hindraf demonstration in 2007.
Meanwhile, on the proposal to implement a system of paying traffic summonses on the spot by offenders, he said the matter was still in the proposal stage and had not been decided at the moment.
“Let us discuss the matter and evaluate its effectiveness and whether it should be carried out or not,” he said.
The media today reported a proposal presented by several quarters as one of the initiatives to overcome the problem of millions of ringgit in unpaid traffic summonses by vehicle owners and users.
Meanwhile, Ismail was happy with his visit and found all traders and the community in the Bangsar area were safe without worrying too much about crime in their area.
“The purpose of going to the ground is to obtain feedback from Ramadan traders here and obviously they are doing a roaring business. By doing so, it will help ease the people’s worry about crime,” he said.
Ismail said the crime statistics from January to July 2012 in Bangsar showed there were a total of 65 cases reported with 12 cases in January, 14 cases in February, 10 cases in March, 11 cases in April, five cases in May, five cases in June and eight cases in July.
He said based on the statistics, police would step up efforts to further reduce crime and maintain peace to allay the people’s fear. — Bernama
