Raya exodus chokes nation's highways

.

The Hari Raya Aidilfitri 'balik kampung' exodus has resulted in traffic congestion on the North-South Expressway and highways in the country in the morning.

A Malaysian Highway Authority spokesperson reported that South-bound traffic from Putra Mahkota to Seremban had come to a crawl since 8am while traffic congestion had also started along the North-bound sector of Bukit Beruntung to Bukit Tagar and from Slim River to Sungkai.

The spokesperson also reported a massive traffic jam that stretched for tens of kilometres from the Menora tunnel to Kuala Kangsar due to an accident involving three cars inside the tunnel.
"Traffic flow from Bukit Gantang to Changkat Jering is also slow," he told Bernama in Kuala Lumpur today.
Traffic flow has also been hampered for east coast-bound motorists along the Karak Highway as heavy traffic congestion was reported from the Gombak Toll Plaza to the Karak Tunnel since 6pm yesterday.
"Traffic along the Karak tunnel to the Bentong Toll Plaza is also moving slowly throughout a 20km stretch," he added.

Heavy traffic congestion was also reported for motorists coming from Singapore through the Johor Causeway, stretching for about 3km, said the authority's report.
