Syabas: No water rationing

Syabas: No water rationing
PETALING JAYA- Water concessionaire Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (Syabas) Sdn Bhd will not seek to ration water after all.
Syabas chief operating officer Datuk Lee Miang Koi said that the water rationing plan, announced last month, might not be implemented "if its mitigation projects are successful".
"The water rationing is a long-term plan, we must be ready but it is not necessary to implement it now," he said after a public briefing at Balakong here today.
Lee said Syabas will explain its possible plans on water rationing to the National Water Services Commission (SPAN) during a meeting on Thursday.
On July 15, Syabas announced that it will seek permission from SPAN to start rationing immediately in Kuala Lumpur, Hulu Langat and Klang because of the worsening water supply shortage.
Syabas chief executive officer Datuk Ruslan Hassan was reported as saying that Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya were now facing a water crisis with reserve levels at 34 treatment plants down to an average of 2% way below the "safe mark" of at least 20%.
The company listed 112 areas in Klang, Petaling, Hulu Langat and Kuala Lumpur as the worst hit by intermittent disruptions since April, affecting 209,678 premises and some one million residents.
The announcement led the Selangor government to propose the take-over of Syabas.
However the Special Cabinet Committee on the Selangor Water Issue had rejected the proposed takeover.
Lee also said the company's attempt to reduce the Non Revenue Water (NRW) rate was at stand still as the Selangor government had refused to approve it.
"If we can reduce NRW, it is true that the shortage of treated water can be solved, but our ability to reduce NRW has been blocked.
"We also have replaced and built 800km of water pipes from 2005 to mid-2008, after we took over from state corporation, Perbadanan Urus Air Selangor Berhad (Puas).
"Then came the plan to restructure the water supply sector. They (the state government) said because of the on-going restructuring, do not change any more (pipes), and that is where we are stuck," he added.
