Toll cut for 'balik kampung'

Toll cut for 'balik kampung'
RAWANG - MOTORISTS will enjoy toll rebates and discounts of between 10 and 37.5 per cent on 24 highways nationwide in conjunction with  festivities this month.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Shaziman Abu Mansor said Touch n' Go users would enjoy rebates on Aug 15, 16, 22 and 23 while discounts would be handed out from Aug 18-21.
"With these discounts in place, my ministry anticipates a huge number of people will be travelling to their hometowns for the Hari Raya Aidilfitri and National Day holidays," he said during a visit to the site for the proposed construction of the KL-Kuala Selangor Expressway (Latar) yesterday.
Among the highways involved for the Raya toll discounts were Damansara-Puchong Expressway (LDP) and the Sprint Highway, both charging vehicles a flat rate of 60 sen and 20 sen, respectively.
On Aug 31, there will be toll discounts of between 10 and 30 per cent on 21 highways, while LDP and Maju Expressway (Mex) users will go toll-free on the day.
Other highways include the New Pantai Expressway (NPE) providing a 20 per cent discount for all vehicles and the KL-Karak highway providing a 30 per cent discount for private vehicles.
In order to avoid unnecessary congestion during the balik kampung rush, road maintenance activities on all federal roads and highways would be halted.
"Works such as fixing road dividers and tarring uneven stretches will be stopped one week before Raya until one week after the holidays end," said Shaziman.
Citing the North-South Expressway (NSE) as an example, he said it handles around 1.2 million motorists on a daily basis but due to the holidays, there would be an increase of 500,000 vehicles on the NSE which could lead to a bumper-to-bumper situation if not handled properly.
He said only unavoidable maintenance activities would be allowed.
Shaziman added that toll exit routes would be built at the Km17.6 junction, finally providing a shorter travel route for about 80,000 Kundang town residents.
"Residents here had complained that if they used the Latar highway, it was not possible to reach their homes quickly as they had to use the Puncak Alam exit which was 18km away and which entailed a 30-minute journey.
"Another option is the Paya Jaras exit, which is 9km away from town and is a 20-minute trip."
He said the matter was brought up to the prime minister during his visit last year and works would be carried by April next year with possible completion by the end of 2014 at an estimated cost of RM30 million.
Present during the visit was Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Noh Omar, Kundang village chief Phang Peng Chee and Kuang state assemblyman Abdul Shukor Idros.
