AH LONG PUBLICITY ACTIVITY A NUISANCE

THE RECENT waves of the publicity activities launched by the 'loan-shark' or 'Ah Long' in the Kota Kinabalu area had caused multiple public complaints and it has become a public nuisance.

The people had complained to the Kota Kinabalu Member of Parliament Office concerning the activities on advertising the quick money loan scheme by the money lending companies irrespective whether it is licensed or illegal.
There are more and more advertising banners, streamers, stickers and business card being placed on lighting poles, sticking on walls, placing on car wind screens and even they put in it post box and being thrown on to the floors of houses. These publicity materials are causing anger and frustration among the people now, and it is every way.

The Sabah DAP Vice Chairman Edward Ewol Mujie said he too had felt the same because his car had been placed with all these 'Ah Long' cards all over on the wind screen, doors and side windows, and even a sticker was stuck at the back of his car. This is causing more disturbances when the stickers had become bigger and is now allover the city especially these are stuck on to new paint on the staircases and walls. The car owners have to take these off the wind screen and look for dust bins to dispose of them.

After our last complaints, the DBKK and other authorities had taken action, but sadly why this round of the new wave of publicity activities launched in the city again, there is no action taken so far by the DBKK and the authorities concern. Edward said this reflects the slackness and slow action of the authorities. It is unreasonable that the authorities did not take stern action against the illegal activities, but they are fast in issuing summons to penalize the people.

Edward urges the authorities to start acting on this and to stop all these activities which are bordering the general public. DBKK must act in order not to be seen as having a ‘double standard’ on handling things, especially on the hanging of publicity banners and streamers. The people may lose faith in the DBKK.

On the other hand, it will be cheaper for the people to put up advertisement in the newspaper and there is no nuisance towards the public. - Sabahkini
