AES summonses valid as long as BN stays in power, warns Guan Eng

AES summonses valid as long as BN stays in power, warns Guan Eng
DAP secretary general Lim Guan Eng said the party would call for the future Pakatan Rakyat government to revoke speeding summonses issued under the heavily opposed Automatic Enforcement System (AES).
Lim however said that only speeding summonses should be revoked owing to the dispute surrounding AES cameras location, and not for the offence of violating traffic lights.
“However, until and unless there is a change of government, there is nothing we can do and the summonses issued are valid as far as the law is concerned,” he said.
On a call by PAS-backed Anti-Postal Summonses Campaign (KASE) led by its vice president Mahfuz Omar that the public ignore AES summonses, Lim said he could not urge people to flout the law.
Mahfuz had earlier told the victims of AES to fight their cases in court, saying KASE would provide legal aid.
The Penang chief minister however said top PR leadership should decide on it.
Lim, once jailed for speaking out against the former Melaka chief minister over an alleged scandal with an underaged girl, said one should be prepared to face the risks in the struggle against injustice.
“Whilst we can defy any unjust laws, we must also be prepared to pay the price,” he said.
The implementation of AES, tasked to private companies Beta Tegap Sdn Bhd and ATES Sdn Bhd under a deal to share the spoils from summonses, has been suspended in PR-led states pending a thorough study to confirm claims that it could prevent road mishaps.
“Clearly, this commercialisation and privatisation of summonses is not in the public interest and done solely for the private profiteering of BN crony companies,” Lim said.
