KUALA LUMPUR - MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek says the party has yet to officially discuss the candidate to succeed Senator Heng Saei Kie whose term ends later this month.
He said the media, which have been speculating on the possible choices, can ask Heng as she has thrice told the press that MCA had made recommendations, China Press reported yesterday.
Heng's senatorship expires on Nov 15 but Chua, speaking at a function in Batu Pahat on Monday night, said he did not know who from MCA would succeed her in the Senate.
He quipped that as the party chief, he has no knowledge (who would be the next MCA senator) whereas Heng, who is deputy women, family and social development minister, meets the prime minister every day and perhaps has already reached a consensus with the latter on her successor. He said that anyone who wants to know who would be the next senator or deputy minister should ask Heng.
Meanwhile, Heng clarified that she had not made any recommendation to the prime minister regarding candidates to succeed her as senator or even as deputy minister.
On the senator post, she said that since it is under Perak's quota, it will be left to the Perak MCA to recommend a candidate to the mentri besar. As for the deputy minister post, she hopes that Wanita MCA will be given the chance to recommend a candidate to the party president.
Heng also told China Press she did meet the prime minister to inform him of the impending expiry of her senatorship but made no recommendation.
