SETIU- Malaysian Defence Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has called the challenge made by opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim to the Malaysian prime minister an attempt to take away the heat from Nurul Izzah Anwar, Anwar's daughter.
Anwar had challenged Prime Minister Najib Razak on Tuesday to leave his parliamentary seat in Pekan to contest the opposition-held parliamentary seat of Marang.
However, Mr Ahmad Zahid has fired back saying that Anwar's challenge should not be entertained and that it was made solely as a political trap to distract the electorate from his daughter's recent controversial comments.
Anwar's daughter Nurul Izzah was reported by Malaysian newspapers as having said at a forum that freedom of religion should also be applied to Muslims, leading her to be lambasted by religious leaders and UMNO politicians who suggested that she supported Muslims to renounce Islam.
Nurul Izzah, who is also a member of parliament, has since said that her comments were twisted by the reporting media.
"If she wishes to please the non-Muslims and to gain influence among them, don't do it to the extent of sacrificing Islamic principles… Islam should not be politicised," said Mr Ahmad Zahid.
