Johor UMNO & MCA behind AES - PKR's Chang

Johor UMNO & MCA behind AES - PKR's Chang
PKR has alleged that the Automatic Enforcement System was linked to Johor UMNO leaders through ownership of shares in Beta Tegap Sdn Bhd, one of the contractors in the controversial project.
PKR central committee member Chang Lih Kang pointed out that a majority shareholder in the company was the immediate family member to Johor UMNO leaders.
The father, he said, is a former division chief while the mother is deputy chief of state Wanita wing as well as Wanita's central committee member.
In July, PKR treasurer William Leong had claimed that one of Beta Tegap's directors Arianta Alikusno was closely linked to MCA leaders.
Arianta, the second largest shareholder in Beta Tegap, is also said to have received a contract from the Health ministry in 2005 through Mediharta Sdn Bhd.
Leong, the Selayang member of parliament, said a search revealed that Arianta and son Andres Teoh were directors of Mediharta and Beta Tegap – both awarded projects from the Health and Transport ministries, two ministries led by MCA leaders.
As such, Chang asked whether it was just a coincidence.
“Both ministries come under MCA. Is there a special relationship between the second largest shareholders and MCA to allow him to get this two huge contracts,” he asked in parliament today.
Leong meanwhile said the matter clearly showed that cronyism still characterised government-linked projects.
Beta Tegap Sdn Bhd and ATES Sdn Bhd are appointed to operate the AES system, under a deal in which the two companies would install cameras at 831 spots, both being entitled to profit-sharing with government on summonses issued up to a cap of RM270 million each.
The AES has received negative public feedback, prompting Pakatan Rakyat state governments to suspend its implementation pending thorough studies over its claimed effectiveness in preventing accidents.
