Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar and the state's UMNO liaison chief Mohamad Hasan has called on disgruntled UMNO members to leave the party.
He said it was better for them to leave than to sabotage the party at the coming polls.
His comments came amid a discovery that many UMNO members at branch level have openly supported the opposition and campaigned with its candidates.
“We have detected several party members who are turncoats. Opposition leaders were welcomed and celebrated at branch level by UMNO leaders themselves,” Hasan told Malay daily Sinar Harian.
At the recent UMNO general assembly, party president Najib Razak raised concerns of UMNO members 'sabotaging' the party out of dissatisfaction over choice of candidates.
Najib expressed fear that the 'winnable candidates' - the phrase he uses for those chosen as candidates - could trigger mass unhappiness among branch level leaders.
Hasan appealed to party members to accept candidates chosen by top leaders.
“When candidates are decided by the party leadership, we must obey and not act recklessly to the extent of making the party lose,” he added.
