GEORGE TOWN, Dec 8 — Independent Bayan Baru MP Datuk Seri Zahrain Hashim today rejoined Umno, the Barisan Nasional (BN) party he had once quit and to which he vowed never to return.
Zahrain (picture), who had won his federal seat on a PKR ticket in Election 2008, handed over his membership application form to Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak during a luncheon with the prime minister in Bayan Baru here.
The former Penang PKR chief, who quit the party in February 2010 citing frustration with Pakatan Rakyat (PR) partner DAP, was joined by 346 former PKR members.
“We realise that we have no other choice in order to continue with our fight for the Malays,” Zahrain told reporters, saying that the party and BN had now changed.
“The BN and Umno of today are different so we decided to join them in our fight for the Malays,” he said.
Former Penang PAS Youth chief Hafiz Noordin, who was also present at the same event, handed over a memorandum to Najib urging the latter for action on 10 issues he said posed a challenge to Muslims.
The Penang Muslim Network co-ordinator called on the prime minister to halt the spread of homosexuality and apostasy.
