KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 9 ― The DAP has vowed it will not cause riots if the party fails to form the government at the next general election, and challenged other parties to make a similar pledge.
“We have said we will respect the people’s choice in the coming elections; if we are not elected or not elected as (the) government by the people, we will not create riots,” DAP Wanita chief Chong Eng said at the party’s Socialist Youth (DAPSY) and Wanita National Congress here today.
She said DAP is seeking for Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who is chairman of the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) and prime minister, “to make the same commitment if Barisan Nasional loses in elections, (that) they will peacefully give way for Pakatan to rule”.
Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad warned last month that federal opposition Pakatan Rakyat (PR) would resort to street demonstrations if it loses in the general election that must be called by next April.
But PR leaders have dismissed his warning, saying that they are committed to democratic processes under the Federal Constitution, including elections.
