Fresh anti-Lynas campaign with polls focus
From its 300km march last month to 100 days of an intensified anti-Lynas campaign, Himpunan Hijau is stepping up its momentum at a crucial time with an eye on the forthcoming general election.
Its intention is to stop BN from winning Putrajaya again, as the federal government has been instrumental in approving the controversial rare earths refinery project in Gebeng, Kuantan.
The group will launch the campaign on Dec 25, with a celebration of the first-month anniversary of the ‘Green March’ from Kuantan to Kuala Lumpur.
Himpunan Hijau members, who will be at Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur, have invited members of the public to join them for sandwiches.
On Dec 28, a 100-hour hunger strike will be mounted by youths from the 'Kill the Bill' group.
On Jan 31, the campaigners will move in a convoy from Kuala Lumpur to Kuantan, retracing the route of the Green March in reverse, with activities to be held in various towns along the way.
The campaign will wind up with a mega ceramah in Kuantan on New Year’s Eve.
Himpunan Hijau chairperson Wong Tack (right) told a DAP ceramah in Bentong last night that the next 100 days would be the most crucial time for moves to halt the operations of the rare earths refinery, because a general election will have to be called by next June.
Contacted this morning, Wong said his group would not only form a human wall to disrupt the operations, but would also strive to stop the BN from being returned to power.
“We have seen clearly their policy. Lynas is the symbol of a corrupt system. If we do not address the root cause, the fight will never end ... so, we must settle it once and for all, by uprooting the evil force,” he said.
