MACC jumps into Orang Asli slapping case

Parents of four SK Bihai pupils who were on Oct 23 slapped for not reciting the doa before having their lunch have given their statements to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

This was when two officers from the MACC visited their Orang Asli village, Pos Bihai, last Tuesday following allegations that teachers of the school attempted to bribe them to drop their police report on the slapping.

NONE"They wanted to know if we asked for bribe or whether it was the school that offered the bribes.

"We told them there was no such thing (that we asked for bribe) and the officers were satisfied," said village representative Arom Asir (right) when met at Kampung Tenrik, where the school is located, within the administrative centre of Pos Bihai, near Gua Musang in Kelantan.

Arom, who is also SK Bihai Parent-Teacher Association deputy chairperson, had accompanied the the fathers of children when their statements were recorded.

The fathers, Hassan Achoi, 34, Atar Pedik, 38 and Along Pandak, 49, had earlier this month made a three-hour journey to Gua Musang from their remote village to lodge a police report on the bribery attempt.
Each parent offered RM300

They had claimed that teachers from the school had, on Nov 7, offered them RM300 each to withdraw an earlier police report against the teacher who had slapped their daughters for not reciting the doa.

Atar said he and the other parents were initially unclear on what to do about the alleged bribe offer.

"They offered us RM300 and wanted us to withdraw our police report, but we did not make any guarantees. We said we wanted to ask Pak Rom what to do first," Atar said in reference to Arom.

"When I returned to the village and found out (about the money offer), I told them this was wrong and so we lodged another police report," added Arom.

The MACC officers who recorded the statements of the pupils ' parents, he added, had also advised them against withdrawing their police report.

Atar's two daughters are aged 13 and 14, Hassan's daugther is aged 12 and Along's daughter is aged 14 and are were Year Six pupils at SK Bihai.
