GEORGE TOWN - Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak Saturday went on a walkabout at the Tanjong Tokong Transit Longhouse, the temporary settlement for Kampung Tanjong Tokong residents.
Over 300 residents welcomed him with 'bunga manggar' and the beating of Kompang drums.
Najib also visited the residents' chief, Mohd Basir Bakar, 51, and enjoyed the tea and Malay delicacies prepared by Mohd Basir's wife, Rosliza Ali.
Rosliza, 45, said she and the whole family were happy and honoured to have the prime minister spending time in their house even just for a short while.
"I am so honoured by his willingness to come and look at our condition here. This is the first time I ever meet him personally.
"We have been staying here for three years and have no problems, everything is adequate, except for the drainage system," said the mother of eight children.
The temporary settlement built specially for Kampung Tanjong Tokong residents by UDA Holdings Sdn Bhd consists of three-room terrace houses.
Meanwhile, Najib also mingled with the residents of Uda Apartments in Tanjong Tokong.
One of the residents, Yusoff Noor, 68, said Najib's visit reminded him of the visit made by Najib's father, the late Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, when he was the country's second prime minister in 1972.
"This place used to be a fishermen's village. Tun Razak walked all the way from Karwa Mosque to here. It was quite far. Now, 40 years later, his son is here," he said.
Yusoff also hoped that Najib's visit would bring about changes in terms of social development in the area.
Najib also visited the Tanjung Heritage Gallery which showcases various manuscripts and historical photographs on Tanjong Tokong before attending a wedding in the compound of the Tuan Guru Mosque.
The premier also performed Asar prayer at the mosque before returning to Kuala Lumpur.
