Pahang's Sultan Ahmad Shah has stepped into the dispute between Pahang and Terengganu over oil resources discovered recently at Block PM 307 Bertam off the Peninsula coast.
The ruler said prime minister Najib Razak’s announcement had confirmed that the oil field was Pahang's.
“It is ok, everything has been decided by the prime minister himself and I had also been briefed on the matter during my birthday recently,” he was quoted as saying by Malay daily Sinar Harian.
According to Sultan Ahmad, he did not want the matter to be prolonged and urged all parties to respect the government’s decision.
The dispute on Bertam oil field started when Terengganu Menteri Besar Ahmad Said said Swedish firm Lundin Oil had confirmed that Block PM 307 was within his state's territorial waters.
But national oil giant Petronas has yet to respond to the state government’s letter seeking clarification on the matter.
Ahmad Said’s statement had contradicted Najib’s announcement last October that the new oil field belonged to his homestate Pahang and thus, it would receive RM100 million annually once production begins in 2014 with a projected output of between 17,500 and 20,000 barrels daily.
The contradicting statements prompted Pahang PAS commissioner Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man to question whether Najib was lying or had been misinformed about the matter.
