Police report lodged over AES summons for wrong car

His car is of a different make, colour and even has a different license plate number, yet an automated enforcement system (AES) summons arrived at the home of Foo Teck Heng, instructing him to appear at the Magistrate’s Court to answer for speeding.

NONEMore confusing still, 46-year-old Foo, who lodged a police report at the Sagil police station in Muar over the matter, claimed he was nowhere near the area of the supposed traffic violation at the time stated in the summons issued to him.

According to his police report, Foo, from Tangkak, Johor, was accused to have violated Section 79 (2) of the Road Transport Act 1987 by exceeding the speed limit at kilometre 204.6 of the North-South Highway at 8.04am on Oct 16.

Also, he said, the photograph on the summons showed a silver car, however, his was white.

“I was instructed to appear, either by myself or through a lawyer, at the Taiping Magistrate’s Court for driving a vehicle (with the registration plate) WJM 9999 over the speed limit of 110km/h.

“For your information, I was never at the location specified, (and) my car is not silver, but white,” his report read.

Advised not to go to court

NONEThe mix-up was revealed during a press conference by Serdang MP Teo Nie Ching (left) today, in which Teo said Foo drove a Toyota Vios, while she claimed the car featured in the photograph taken by the AES camera is a Toyota Camry, with the license plate number WJW 9999.

“He (Foo) was shocked when he received the summons as he was not there (at the North-South Highway),” she said at the Serdang DAP service centre today.

She said she had advised Foo, who was not present at the press conference, not to go to court as there was a possibility the summons may be withdrawn.

“I will bring this issue up with the AES control centre and will write a letter to (Transport Minister) Kong Cho Ha informing him of this weakness in the system.

“I hope the AES would not only be cancelled but all summons issued be withdrawn,” she added.

NONERoad Transport Department (RTD) deputy director-general Ismail Ahmad was reported to have said the number of road users who have settled their AES summons was still low compared to the number of summons issued.

He said more than 10,000 have paid their summons, from 274,000 summonses issued since the system began operating on Sept 23.
