STRENGTHEN ISLAMIC LAW IN SABAH

"THE LEGISLATIVE history is important in understanding the philosophy of Islamic Law since it's establishment in Sabah," said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Musa Hj. Aman at the launch of the Sabah Islamic Law Seminar at Tabung Haji Complex yesterday. His speech was read by Deputy Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Panglima Yahya Hussin who represented the Chief Minister at the seminar.

"Touching on Islamic law, the general public's immediate perception certainly relates it to issues pertaining to the Syariah Court alone. But, in fact, Islamic law covers more than that. It encompasses certain departments and agencies, including the Malay rulers and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong."

Musa stressed that further research needs to be done involving Islam and legal experts, the religious department, the government and it's agencies as well as other related parties in order to strengthen Islamic law in the country. He said, "It must be implemented immediately so that Islamic law can be empowered in upholding justice."

Musa added, "I call upon our historians to conduct further studies, research as well as explore the history and contributions of Islam since the coming of the religion to Sabah. This will not only help disseminate scientific research treasures on this subject, but it also proves that Islam has a significant contribution to community life in the state."

Meanwhile, when approached by reporters after the event, Yahya said all Umno members know that they need to support the candidates chosen by their leader for the looming general election. He added, at the general assembly held recently, members were asked to remain united.

"Difficulties will arise if we are not disciplined and supportive to the leader's decision," he said. (Insight Sabah)
