Bersih will take part in Himpunan rally

Bersih co-chairperson S Ambiga will be speaking at tomorrow’s rally.
PETALING JAYA: Some Bersih members will be joining tomorrow’s Himpunan Kebangkitan Rakyat rally to lend their support and its co-chairperson S Ambiga will be there as one of the speakers at Stadium Merdeka.
Bersih steering committee member Maria Chin Abdullah, when contacted, said that she will be walking from Brickfields to the stadium for tomorrow’s rally.
“We are still discussing on how many Bersih members will be there at the rally tomorrow.
“But our co-chairperson [Ambiga] will definitely be speaking at the stadium tomorrow, as announced on Tuesday,” she said.
The Himpunan Kebangkitan Rakyat rally is the summary of all past rallies, be it for clean and fair elections or of the dissatisfaction with the Lynas plant. As stated by Batu MP Tian Chua, the rally will act as a platform for the people to reclaim their rights.
“There is a need to highlight the dissatisfaction of the rakyat on certain issues and having assemblies like this is an effective method,” he said.
The organisers are expecting one million people to be involved in tomorrow’s rally which will officially start at 2pm until 5pm.
Speakers will comprise leaders representing civil groups and also leaders from the Pakatan Rakyat faction.
Bersih had in the past organised similar rallies such as the one which will be held tomorrow.
The first rally, which was organised in 2007 at Dataran Merdeka to demand for a clean and fair electoral process in Malaysia, had a turnout of 10,000 to 40,000 people.
The second rally named Bersih 2.0 was endorsed by 62 NGOs and had a turnout of 10,000 to 50,000 people while Bersih 3.0 was endorsed by 84 NGOs including the Himpunan Hijau.
The second and third rallies were organised in 2011 and 2012 respectively after its demands for a clean and fair electoral process were not met by the Electoral Commission.
