BN MPs: Allah is exclusive to Muslims

At least three BN members of parliament are firm in their stand that the word 'Allah' is exclusive to Muslims and should not be used by those from other faiths.
PETALING JAYA: Several BN MPs today maintained that the word “Allah” is exclusive to Muslims, asserting that the matter has been blown up because of incessant politicking.
Vocal Kinabatangan MP Bung Mokhtar Radin said those who use the word to mean God, were “trying to incite the masses and have violated the country’s [Federal] Constitution.”
He also hit out at Penang Chief Minister and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, who had asked the government to allow use of the word “Allah” by other religions in the country.
“He [Lim] should apologise and I think that in his eagerness to win the coming [general] election, he has acted rudely in this matter. He is trying to fish for votes using this issue.
“He does not have any right to interfere in the affairs of the Malays or Muslims. Instead, he should organise his party first since his party is so disorganised. Even to count 2,000 votes, it is a problem for them,” he said, referring to the DAP national elections recently.
Commenting on PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang’s statement yesterday that Umno had politicised the matter, Bung Mokhtar said all Pakatan Rakyat components parties have conspired on this issue.
“I am not a religious scholar, but since he is one, he should try to help his friends who have strayed. Instead, he, too, has strayed,” he said.
At a press conference yesterday, Pakatan stated that it has no reservations for non-Muslims to use the word “Allah” when referring to God as long as the word is not misused.
Senator Mashitah Ibrahim, who is Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, said the people, especially those in Selangor – which is led by the Pakatan government – should follow the decree of the Selangor Sultan.
Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah in 2010 had issued a decree forbidding non-Muslims from using the word “Allah” to refer to God.
“All religious matters are under the Sultan’s authority and the use of the word ‘Allah’ by non-Muslims is under the Fatwa Council.
“I think this issue should not have been [made into] a controversy in the first place. Everything has been politicised and I believe that the opposition is simply using this as a political weapon; it is the same, really, with the issue of hudud,” she said.
‘Everything is politicised’
Mashitah stressed that there should be a boundary between religion and politics.
“I don’t think everything should be politicised. As for those who are so adamant to use the word ‘Allah’, I simply do not understand. Why do they want to use it so much? If they want to use it so much, then just convert to Islam,” she said.
Sri Gading MP Mohamad Aziz said it was open knowledge that the Sultan and the Fatwa Council have come out saying that non-Muslims are forbidden from using the word. As such, he said, everyone should just follow whatever that has been determined.
“If we don’t follow the laws, things would get chaotic. This matter should not be politicised and everyone must be careful not to offend the Muslims as the word ‘Allah’ is exclusive to Muslims.
“Why do they want to maintain the word in the Malay Bible only? Why not in the Chinese and Tamil Bibles? It is obvious that everything is politicised.
“Also, are they going to start calling the church as the church of Allah? All these things definitely go against the teachings of Islam,” he said.
Mohamad also said that lately a lot of people have been going against the Sultan, “that a lot of people do not want to follow the Sultan’s orders”.
“Why must they go against the Sultan? The Sultan wields power so that Islam would not be viewed in a bad light.
“The problem with PAS is that the members always think that only they know everything about Islam while others know nothing, just because some graduated from Al-Azhar University. But that’s not the case as others also have the knowledge, they just do not show it,” he said.
