DAP gives AG 14 days to act on Ibrahim Ali's outcry

The Attorney-General's Chambers has been given two weeks by DAP chairperson Karpal Singh to act against Perkasa chief Ibrahim Ali for his controversial remark on "burning the Bible".

"This is a very serious matter. The attorney-general has abdicated his function and duty by saying he is not doing anything until the Bible is burned.

"It is like saying, ‘I want to murder', but the AG says you murder first and then I'll take action," Karpal said in condemning Abdul Gani Patail's reaction as "irresponsible" after lodging a report against Ibrahim at the Tun HS Lee police station.

Yesterday, online news site Free Malaysia Today (FMT) reported Gani as saying that the AG's Chambers would not prosecute Ibrahim unless the burning of the Bible took place.

"I am not concerned with such statements. I will look at it (the issue) if the act (of burning) is done and if there is an investigation," FMT quotes Gani as saying.

Should the AG's Chambers not take action, Karpal said, he would seek a court order to force the AG to act on Ibrahim's threat.

Citing Article 145 (3) of Federal Constitution, he said the AG was bound to take action against Ibrahim.

He also called for Ibrahim (right) to be investigated under the Sedition Act and the Penal Code.

Last Saturday, Ibrahim called on Muslims to burn the Malay-language Bible for using ‘Allah' to refer to ‘God', saying this was the "only way" to stop non-Muslims from stirring up the sensitivities of Muslims in Malaysia.

However, he has denied that his remark was to hurt the feelings of Christians, explaining it as a reaction to those trying to violate the federal constitution.
