PUTRAJAYA, Jan 17 — The government has extended to December the electricity rebate for domestic bills under RM20, said Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Peter Chin Fah Kui (picture) today.
The government spent RM146 million for 1.1 million domestic consumers nationwide last year under the programme started in October 2008 which exempts payment for households billed RM20 or less monthly, particularly for the underprivileged.
“With this extension we hope to ease the people’s burden and encourage efficient use of electricity,” Chin said when launching a national-level Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) programme with clients here.
He added that TNB clients would also receive 2.5 per cent interest on their account deposits, which will be credited in their January 2013 bill.
TNB paid out more than RM71 million to 7.4 million customers for this purpose, he added.
He noted that this first TNB programme with clients was aimed at obtaining feedback on billing, metering, safety advice services and updating consumer data.
Also present were TNB chairman Tan Sri Leo Moggie and the company’s president/chief executive officer Datuk Wira Azman Mohd. — Bernama
