Introduce amnesty period for stateless, says MIC

MIC wants the government to provide an amnesty period to reduce the number of stateless people in the country.
PETALING JAYA: The government should introduce an amnesty period for illegal immigrants to resolve the issue of stateless people in the country.
Newly appointed MIC strategic director S Vell Paari said the government should now introduce a period of amnesty to resolve the woes of all those effected.
Citing former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s views on the ongoing Royal Commission of Inquiry on immigrants in Sabah, Vell Paari claimed that the government must use the same reasoning in relaxing the conditions to resolve the issue of the stateless in the country.
Mahathir yesterday admitted that he had issued citizenship to foreigners residing in Malaysia for more than 20 years.
“When those who had resided in the country for more than 20 years is reason enough to give citizenship, then why not for those where one parent, grand or great grandparent is a Malaysian citizen. Where one is born in Malaysia or even married to a Malaysian?” asked Vell Paari.
“Let us also on the grounds of humanity look at refuges from Sri Lanka and neighbouring countries who can be given citizenship, going by the statement,” he added.
“Why we want to reject them? They work. If they commit crimes, they are exposed to our country’s laws too. But they are needed by Malaysia,” he said, echoing Mahathir’s exact words.
He said he will request both the MIC president G Palanivel and deputy president Dr S Subramaniam to propose this amnesty period at the next cabinet meeting.
Palaivel is Minister in the Prime Minister’ Department while Subramaniam is Human Resources Minister.
Meanwhile, Vell Paari also urged the public not to jump the gun in commenting about the Royal Commission of Inquiry on Sabah immigrants as it was still ongoing.
He said the people must allow the RCI to complete their inquiry so that the true picture can be known, as commenting on small bits of information would only cloud the thinking of the people.
“It is too premature to make comments when the RCI is still in progress,” he said, adding that Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak should be commended for taking the bold step to have the RCI on Sabah immigrants.
He said although the prime minister was aware that lot of skeletons would be unearthed during the RCI and that it could work against the ruling Barisan Nasional government, he still went ahead to set-up the RCI.
“This clearly shows that Najib is transparent and wants the problem of illegal immigrants in Sabah, which has been a thorny issue, to be resolved, once and fore all,” said Vell Paari.
He also insisted that it was not fair to pin the blame on the prime minister as he only took helm of the country only four years ago.
“Unlike Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim who was the then deputy prime minister, who was also part of the decision making process in the 1990s, he cannot claim that he does not know anything,” added Vell Paari.
