Is ‘Penang’ an exclusive domain of CM?

A MCA leader questions Lim Guan Eng's ruling that approval must be sought before any party, organisation or group can use the name of the state at private events.
PETALING JAYA: Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has come under fire from MCA for declaring that the word “Penang” is for the exclusive use of the state government.
“His arrogance is evident when he associates the word Penang as a private product of the state government,” said MCA national organising secretary Tee Siew Keong.
Tee was referring to Lim’s statement yesterday where he said that all event organisers in the state must get the Pakatan-led government’s approval before the word ‘Penang’ can be used.
In disavowing the state government’s involvement in the Penang Run 2013, organised by Gerakan, Lim said: “The organiser did not get the state’s sanction to use the word ‘Penang’.
“By using the word Penang, the organisers are misleading the public as they are likely to associate the state government with the event.”
He also accused Gerakan of brazenly using the term Penang without the prior approval of state government.
Tee who is also Pulai Sebatang state assemblyman said that Lim’s requirement for an approval from the state government as ridiculous and shows Lim’s ignorance.
“Will the Penang administration regulate famous local cuisines like Penang char kway teow, Penang prawn noodles and Penang asam laksa?
“Would these dishes require certification and approval from the state government? Does this mean the state government wields absolute power over the word Penang?” Tee asked.
“Instead of blowing up a trivial issue, Lim should concentrate on bringing down houses prices which have skyrocketed since Pakatan took over Penang in 2008,” added Tee.
