CAIRO, Jan 22 — Datuk Seri Najib Razak makes a visit to Gaza today on a humanitarian visit to reaffirm Malaysia’s commitment to the Palestinian cause.
The trip is part of the prime minister’s working visit to Egypt as well as Gaza in neighbouring Palestine. He will make history as the first Malaysian PM to visit the occupied territories.
Najib (picture) arrived here yesterday accompanied by his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor. They will travel by air this morning to the El Arish airport, located about 50km from the Palestinian border town of Rafah, before crossing into Gaza by land.
According to a report in The Star, Najib will be met on arrival by Gaza Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh at 10am local time (4pm today Malaysian time).
He will visit a school project initiated by Malaysia before laying the foundation stone to rebuild Haniyeh’s office which was damaged by an Israeli attack in November last year.
Najib will also meet Hamas Cabinet members and members of the Palestinian Parliament at Haniyeh’s new office, according to the report.
He will visit Al Aqsa University where he is scheduled to make a speech on Malaysia’s stand regarding Palestine before receiving an honorary doctorate.
The Prime Minister’s delegation includes Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom.
Najib will depart Cairo tomorrow for Davos, Switzerland, to attend the World Economic Forum meeting.
