Police relax rule, allow banners at Saturday rally

Dang Wangi police has relented to a request by organisers of Saturday's Himpunan Kebangkitan Rakyat to relax a Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 (PAA) restriction and allow participants to carry banners and placards with logos and slogans on that day.

This is, however, provided that the logos and banners do not contain negative elements.

"Placards that are prohibited are those that contain seditious remarks or can disrupt public order or cause disgruntlement among the public," Dang Wangi OCPD Zainuddin Ahmad explained to the media at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.

"The placards will be carried through public areas. We don't want the placards to cause emotional distress to the public."

He spoke to reporters after meeting for nearly two hours with rally organisers at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters.

"Police will be monitoring. If we see something that is not suitable for display. We will order it to be taken down."

At the same meeting, police accepted the notification by organisers of Pakatan's Himpunan Kebangkitan Rakyat (People's Uprising Rally) of the event, and agreed to facilitate the gathering as provided under the PAA.

Both sides agreed to abide by the 27 conditions for gatherings provided under the Act, with one change in regards to the condition banning banners, placards and other collaterals depicting slogans and logos from such gatherings.

Zainuddin also announced that on Saturday Jalan Raja and Jalan Lebuh Pasar will be closed to traffic and police personnel will also be stationed to guard Dataran Merdeka.
