Selangor MB slams SYABAS for massive outage

BESTARI JAYA, Jan 4 — Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim continues to blame Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (SYABAS) for the water supply crisis that has affected some 500,000 residents in Gombak and Kuala Lumpur.
He said the state government had detected faulty pumps at the pump house in Wangsa Maju and in Pudu Hulu Baru since last year and reported the matter to SYABAS.
Abdul Khalid (picture) was speaking to reporters when he came to look at the poor condition of the roofs of 14 houses in Taman Pancaran, here, today.
He said since the SYABAS management knew about the faulty pumps, they should have acted on the problem.
Abdul Khalid said SYABAS should not give the excuse of not having enough funds to repair the pumps as water tariffs had not gone up and Selangor residents were opposed to an increase.
He said if SYABAS was incapable of managing water supply, it should hand over the water concessionaire to the state government.
He also said that SYABAS’s application to build a new pumping system in Wangsa Maju was made in November 2012 and this was given the nod by the state government early this year.
On the action by Universiti Selangor (Unisel) to close nine of its hostels, Abdul Khalid said it was not Unisel’s wish but the decision of the Public Works Department and the local authority.
He said they found that the hostels’ sewerage pipes were not directed to the sewage processing centre.
Last Wednesday, Unisel ordered that the hostels be vacated due to cracks in the buildings and some parts were sinking as the hostels were built on former mining land. — Bernama
