Serian MP slammed for asking teachers to promote BN

BN must not use teachers as part of BN campaign teams in Sarawak in the coming election.

"Their job is to teach our children," said Sarawak Parti Keadilan Rakyat chief Baru Bian, adding that they should be neutral when it came to politics.

Bian, who is the Ba'Kelalan State Assemblyman, was commenting on a statement made by the MP for Serian, Richard Riot, also the Foreign Affairs Deputy Minister.

He had called on teachers to give their full support to BN in the coming election, given their strong influence among the rural people.

Riot had said that it was important for PM Najib Abdul Razak to be given a new mandate, as he had done so much for the nation in the little time that he had since he took over.

"We are aware that Pakatan Rakyat is moving aggressively on the ground but bear in mind what had their leader (Anwar Ibrahim) ever done for Sarawak when he was deputy prime minister?

Teachers, principals and headmasters must give their fullest support to Najib and give him the chance to continue his transformation programmes," said Riot (left) who was officiating at the presentation of the RM100 aid to students in Serian.

Commenting on the statement, Bian said: "It is not right for Riot to direct teachers to support BN. Like other civil servants, teachers are supposed to be neutral. You cannot threaten them into supporting BN.
The PKR leader said Riot had abused his position, adding he thought teachers would not be influenced by the deputy minister's directive.

"I know they are a mature lot, and they know who to support and vote for," he said.

On the distribution of the money, Bian said that Riot should not treat the money as if it belonged to him or his party.

"It is the people's money, and the people have the right to receive it," Bian said.
