DAP MP for Sibu MP Wong Ho Leng is suffering from a brain tumour, according to a news report published by the Star.
“I am a public figure and I have no intention to hide anything from you,” the Star quoted Wong as telling a press conference on Saturday.
Wong explained that he was now undergoing a six-week radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore after neurosurgeons in Australia found a glioma in his brain stem on Dec 20 last year.
“The glioma is primary, in the sense it is not spread from elsewhere. It causes a slur in my speech and impaired my swallowing functions,” said Wong, who is also Bukit Assek assemblyman and Sarawak DAP chairman.
Wong told the press conference that he had felt exhausted and it was after the DAP annual congress in Penang last month that he felt seriously unwell. He then went for a check-up.
“I could not even stand and could not swallow water at the Penang International Airport while trying to board a flight to the Gold Coast in Australia to join my family on vacation there,” Wong said.
It is not clear yet whether Wong will be retained by his party in the coming general election but DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng is likely to comment on the matter soon.
