Students to fight for education through GE13

Thirteen student groups today unveiled their plan for fully participating in the upcoming general election to fight for free education and abolishment of the Universities and University Colleges Act (UUCA).

Dubbed ‘Student's Movement for GE13' (SMG), the newly set-up movement plans to reach out to students and the public nationwide, with the help of its 1,000 troops from various student groups.

NONEIn a press conference, Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia (SMM) president Safwan Anang (left) said as part of the rakyat’s entity, the students felt a calling to fully take part in the democratic process.

"As such, 13 student movements have jointly set up the Student's Movement for GE 13," he said in a press conference in Dataran Merdeka today.

To start with, he said the SMG has rented a small truck, with a RM150 daily charge, which will embark on a nationwide tour to convey its message to the general public through talks.

"The student truck will go to campuses in 13 states and federal territories, to raise student awareness on the importance in participating and voting in the election.

"We will begin with Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) in Tanjung Malim, Perak tomorrow, and the tour would end by Jan 30," he said.

Safwan said the movement will stop at strategic areas, including pasar malam, and there the students will explain to the public their struggle and current issues.

Not campaigning for opposition

He, however, denied the move was to campaign for the opposition, but said he did not care if they were to be labeled as a pro-opposition group.

"We will move independently, we will not invite politicians, only student leaders will speak (during the talks)," he added.

NONEMeanwhile, another student activist, Adam Adli Abd Halim, said the SMG has no intention of fighting the government, but wished to fight on matter which it deemed were unfair to the students.

He claimed the movement was fighting to strengthen students, and stressed that students should not be alienated from the democratic process.

However, Adam did not rule out the possibility of SMG working with both BN and Pakatan Rakyat if they share the same agenda.

SMG will also be organising an election forum this Saturday, with Deputy Higher Education Minister Saifuddin Abdullah invited as one of the speakers, Safwan added.

SMG comprise SMM, Gabungan Mahasiswa Islam Se-Malaysia (GAMIS), Aksi Mahasiswa Peduli(AKSI) and 10 other student groups, with the theme of ‘Students for Malaysia’.
