‘Where was the Indian factor in the rally?’

MIC Youth says the low Indian turnout for the opposition rally on Saturday was because Indians have lost confidence in Pakatan Rakyat.
PETALING JAYA: MIC Youth chief T Mohan today claimed that the Indian community has lost faith in Pakatan Rakyat evident from the low Indian support for the just concluded Himpunan Kebangkitan Rakyat on Saturday.
He said the poor Indian turnout at the opposition organised rally at
Merdeka showed that Malaysian Indians were “fed-up” with Pakatan’s style of administration.
“Our (MIC) check with the police and media revealed that barely 500 Indians attended the gathering,” he told FMT today.
He said the rally failed miserably compared to the Indian attendance at the Bersih rally late last year which had around 3,000 Malaysian Indians.
On Saturday, about 100,000 Malaysians attended the rally, called Himpunan Kebangkitan Rakyat, organised by PAS, PKR and DAP.
Asked for reasons behind the low Indian turnout, Mohan said it was because Indians were annoyed with Pakatan as the opposition coalition did not keep their election promises and discriminated against the community.
“Just look at Saturday’s rally. There was not a single banner in Tamil. No pictures of Indian leaders in Pakatan banners. I saw a banner which carried pictures of Anwar Ibrahim (PKR de facto leader), Abdul Hadi Awang (PAS president) and Lim Kit Siang (DAP advisor).
“My question is, how come the organisers overlooked Karpal Singh who is DAP chairman. Was his picture left out intentionally? Furthermore,
of all the leaders who spoke at the rally, there was not a single Indian in their ranks…yes S Ambiga (Bersih co-chairperson) spoke but she spoke in her capacity as Bersih chief. There was nobody speaking on behalf of the community,” he said.
He said Pakatan would claim that racial composition was not important, and “if that is the case just dissolve all the three parties and become one and then say you are multi-racial.”
Mohan insisted that Pakatan was race-based where DAP represented the Chinese while PKR and PAS represented the Malays.
“Unfortunately the Indian element is missing,” he added.
“The rally is just one example how Pakatan sidelines Indians. For example, there is only one Indian in Pakatan’s supreme council. That
supreme council is Pakatan’s highest decision making body. It is equivalent to the cabinet.
“Only one Indian… Ipoh Barat MP M Kulasegaran… out of the 30 members. It is clear Pakatan is worse than BN where there are two
Indian cabinet ministers,” said Mohan.
He said a recent survey by the Merdeka Centre showed 76% Indians in the country supported Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak and that the number would reach 80% before the next general election.
The Merdeka Centre survey also showed while Najib’s popularity dropped from 65% to 63%, his popularity among Indians had increased.
