Najib ridiculed for saying RM40 is enough for monthly grocery bill

An average of about RM40.00 a month is enough for household grocery, claimed prime minister Najib Razak in defending the government's distribution of the Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia (BR1M).

"We have calculated that on average, a family can buy groceries such as 10kg of rice, 5kg of cooking oil and other essentials per month with RM41.60. That means they have enough to buy food for 12 months with the RM500 BR1M,” Najib was quoted saying.

But PAS's Parit Buntar member of parliament Mujahid Yusof Rawa said Najib’s calculation does not make sense.

“It’s hilarious, whether Najib said it wrongly or he said it unconsciously, but he was wide awake. That number is illogical,” said Mujahid, reminding that the threshold level for poverty is a household income of RM1,200 a month.

Najib’s argument, said Mujahid, contradicted his deputy Muhyiddin Yassin. The latter had earlier said the government would give RM1,000 under BR1M if the people voted in BN.

“It’s just a gimmick and a desperate attempt to woo the people using money,” said Mujahid.
