Anwar to hold press conference at 4pm TODAY, EC to meet this Friday or early next week
Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim will hold a press conference at 4pm on Wednesday on the upcoming 13th general election after Prime Minister Najib razak had dissolved Parliament earlier this morning.
Other senior party leaders are expected to attend as well. Earlier this morning, Malaysian opposition politicians had bombarded the social media network with their reactions and comments to the long-awited D-Day or Dissolution day.
Najib had given his first inkling he wanted to call for snap polls from as far back as early 2011, where he had been expected to call for national elections in conjunction with the Sarawak state polls. However, he changed his mind at the last moment and since then there have been numerous false alarms.
"All system GO! Lawan habis-habisan sehingga sampai ke Putrajaya. This is our best chance ever," tweeted Fuziah Salleh, the enthusiastic MP for Kuantan.
Questions on many lips
All eyes are now the Election Commission, which has often been criticized for bias towards Najib's Umno-BN coalition.
The unspoken questions on many lips are whether it will set an election data as far away as possible from the 60-days guidelines it is bound by and whether it will continue to resist efforts to clean up the electoral roll.
There are also fears the EC might set the earliest date possible to as to pre-empt more pressure on it to clean up the electoral roll.
"Frankly, I don't think GE13 will be set too far away. Basically, our main concern is that the electoral is as clean as possible," a PKR party veteran told Malaysia Chronicle.
EC deputy chief Wan Omar Wan Ahmad has been reported by the government-controlled NST as saying the commission plans to meet on Friday or early next week to fix the nomination and balloting dates, and as well the length of the campaigning period.
