Kelantan declares May 5 public holiday for polling

Polling Day on May 5 is a public holiday in Kelantan, Mentri Besar Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat declared today.
He was moved to do so despite it being a Sunday as the PAS-run state normally observes its day of rest on Saturday, unlike most other states in Malaysia.
“They no longer have to apply for leave or go out temporarily to vote and so on.
“Other states specifically do not have to declare a holiday as Sunday is a weekend, so to give justice to all, we declare a holiday,” he was quoted saying by PAS-owned Malay daily, Harakah.
Nik Aziz, who is also PAS spiritual advisor, was reported urging its Kelantanese voters to return home to cast their ballot and ensure the Islamist party retains its 23-year uninterrupted hold on state power.
Apart from Kelantan, two out of Malaysia’s 13 states also observe a Sunday to Thursday working week, putting their weekend on Friday and Saturday.
Some 13.3 million Malaysians are eligible to vote for the 222 parliamentary and 505 state seats in Election 2013.
