MCA chief: Tee Keat axed for being critical

Dr Chua Soi Lek says the former MCA chief was dropped from the candidates list because the latter has no confidence in the party.
PETALING JAYA: MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek said the decision to drop Ong Tee Keat was based on the latter’s frequent criticism against the party.
Chua said the former MCA president should not be nominated because he has shown no confidence in the party.
“The matter is very simple, you (Ong) have been criticising MCA as no longer relevant, and saying he is not a MCA representative. So since this is the case, you should not contest under the MCA banner,” he told Sin Chew Daily today.
Asked whether the decision took into account Ong’s winnability in the Pandan parliament constituency, Chua dodged the question and replied: “If you want to contest as a MCA candidate, you must have confidence in the party.”
Asked what if Ong decided to contest as an independent, Chua said he would only respond to such questions after Ong submits the nomination papers.
On the prevailing disgruntlement among grassroots members over the MCA list, Chua said he would look into it but declined to divulge details.
Despite being the sole MCA parliamentarian who survived the 2008 general election, Ong was dumped from the BN candidate list unveiled on Monday and was replaced by Pandan MCA legal advisor Gary Lim.
The decision was widely seen as having stemmed from Chua’s personal vendetta with Ong over their previous power tussle in MCA.
Observers said Ong is expected to contest the seat as an independent.
