PPP president to contest Perak state seat

IPOH, April 16 — People’s Progressive Party (PPP) president Datuk M. Kayveas was today confirmed as a candidate for the Pasir Bedamar state seat in Perak after the party’s proposed candidate was disqualified from the contest.
Speaking to The Malaysian Insider this morning, Kayveas said he had been asked by the Barisan Nasional (BN) leadership to take up the challenge and had decided to accept the offer for the good of the pact.
“Originally I thought I’d just go out and help in all the five seats we (PPP) are contesting but since I was asked to replace our original candidate... even though it’s not an easy seat, we did win it on a PPP ticket in 1969,” he said.
The former deputy minister had recommended Perak PPP treasurer Kerk Guan Chuan to contest Pasir Bedamar, which is currently held by the DAP’s Seah Leong Peng, but Kerk was dropped from the list after he failed one of BN’s candidacy qualifying tests.
Kayveas (picture)had previously said he would sit out the coming May 5 polls contest after being informed by BN chairman Datuk Seri Najib Razak that apart from Kepong, there were no other available parliamentary seats for PPP to contest.
The former Taiping MP said he had decided against taking the Kepong contest away from Federal Territory PPP chairman Datuk A. Chandrakumanan and join other BN component party presidents like the MCA’s Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek and Gerakan’s Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon, who will also sit out the polls.
