PSM will stand in Semenyih and Jelapang

PSM will still nominate its candidate in Semenyih and Jelapang state seats, said the party’s secretary-general S Arutchelvan.

This is despite the possiblity that it will lead to three-corner fights with BN and Pakatan.

“We are requesting PKR to remove their candidate (in Semenyih), because PKR has never contested in the seat and we consider them as spoilers,” said Arutchelvan when contacted by Malaysiakini.

On the Jelapang state seat, he also added that although the party had earlier agreed to mediation by a group of civil society representatives, the effort was also unsuccessful as DAP had not agreed to it.

“For now, we are still standing in Jelapang.”

Arutchelvan is expected to try his luck again in Semenyih, where he lost in 2008 by 1,140 votes when standing on the PKR banner, while Jelapang will be contested by party deputy chairperson M Sarasvathy.

Arutchelvan also claimed that they have talked with PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim and the latter had agreed that no conditions will be imposed for using the PKR logo in the Kota Damansara state and Sungai Siput parliamentary seats.

Earlier, PKR last night announced it had written letters allowing PSM chairperson Nasir Hashim and central committee member Dr D Jeyakumar to contest in Kota Damansara state and Sungai Siput parliamentary seat respectively under its ticket.

"Our sole condition is that PSM will not contest against Pakatan Rakyat in three-cornered fights in any other seats," said Saifuddin at a press release.

He said the negotiations between PKR and PSM, touched on PSM retaining two out of the three seats they contested under PKR in 2008, as they won Sungai Siput and Kota Damansara but lost Semenyih.

Arutchelvan, in another release earlier, said the party is disturbed over what he described as the bullying tactics employed by PKR deputy president Azmin Ali in holding back the letters to the two as PKR now wants PSM to withdraw from vying for the Semenyih and Jelapang state seats.

NONEArutchelvan (right) said Semenyih is a PSM seat and PKR had never gone for it before.
For Jelapang, the matter has been left in the hands of a credible civil society movement which will mediate in the issue, he said.

"PSM has compromised enough and will not compromise any further.," he stressed.
However, he added that PSM will continue to support Pakatan in all other seats contested, and condemned the Registrar of Societies action in not recognising the DAP central executive committee several days before nomination day.

It remains to be seen whether the Semenyih and Jelapang state seats issue will be resolved in time to prevent a three-way fight.

PKR has named its Serdang PKR chief Hamidi Hassan as its candidate for Semenyih while the DAP's for Jelapang is The Hock Kee.
