Syed Hamid quits Kota Tinggi, urges support for replacement

KUALA LUMPUR, April 12 — Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar announced today that he would not be defending the Kota Tinggi parliamentary seat in the 13th general election.
The chairman of the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAN) said in a statement that he had made up his mind long ago.
Syed Hamid (picture) said he had served under three prime ministers and had been an MP for five terms.
He said it was a most satisfying period because he was able to serve the nation and the people of Kota Tinggi in particular.
“I wish to express my utmost gratitude to the government and party for having given me the opportunity to serve the people. I wish to thank the constituents of Kota Tinggi for their undivided support for me as an MP,” he said.
Syed Hamid said he hoped that the voters in Kota Tinggi would give their full support to the candidate selected by the Barisan Nasional leadership for the 13th general election.
In the last general election, in 2008, Syed Hamid beat Onn Jaafar of PAS by a majority of 18,961 votes. — Bernama
